Skyhawks swept in doubleheader


The UTM softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader to Middle Tennessee Wednesday afternoon, 4-1 and 9-0.

The Skyhawks drop to 13-16 on the season while the Lady Raiders move to 17-10. UTM returns to action this weekend for a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series with Eastern Illinois. The Panthers are 5-20 on the season after dropping a doubleheader to Illinois Wednesday. EIU is 0-3 in the OVC after dropping a three-game series to Tennessee Tech over the weekend. The Skyhawks could not overcome an early 4-0 Lady Raider lead as UT Martin dropped game one of the doubelheader 4-1. The Skyhawks only run came in the seventh inning as freshman Jennifer Young scored on a Christa Webb single. Cortney Mitchell and Erica Buhl led Middle Tennessee with two hits and one run each.

Middle Tennessee led throughout in the second game as the Lady Raiders rolled to a 9-0 win after five innings. Kristin Hogan and Kristin Runyan each had one hit for the Skyhawks in the game.

The Lady Raiders had one run in the third inning and four in both the third and fourth innings for the win. Dani DeCamino, Buhl and Jennifer Dorais each had two hits for the Lady Raiders.

A two-run error in the seventh inning proved costly as the UTM softball team dropped game two of a doubleheader with Saint Louis University 5-4 Tuesday afternoon. The Billikens won the first game 1-0.

The Skyhawks fell to 13-14 with the losses as Saint Louis improvedto 11-8.

Both teams suffered through six scoreless innings in game one of the doubleheader with Saint Louis pulling out a run in the seventh inning for the win. Shortstop Ashlee Heady hit a triple to open the inning for the Billikens and scored on a Beth Yagge single.

Those were the Billikens' only hits in the game. UTM turned in two hits in the game. Brandy Whalen singled in the first inning while Kristin Hogan singled in the sixth. Senior Nicole Bohnenstiehl picked up her eighth win of the season pitching for the Billikens. She had nine strikeouts in the shutout.

Allison Buckley made her seventh appearance of the season with the loss. She gave up two hits and one run. UTM took an early lead in game two but could not hold on as the Billikens took the 5-4 win. Brandy Whalen scored in the first inning to give the Skyhawks an early 1-0 lead. She was walked to get on base and scored on an error by Heady.

The Billikens tied the game in the top of the fourth inning but the Skyhawks came back with two runs to again take the lead. Linsey Moffit scored on a passed ball by Billiken catcher Kalee Reichert while Andrea Mrosinski scored on a single by Stephanie Paris.

Moffit singled to get on base while Mrozinski reached on an error by the Kerri Higgins.

The Skyhawks picked up another run in the fifth inning to extend the lead, 4-1.

Beth Buttrey singled to lead off the inning. Hogan pinch ran for Buttrey and scored on a single to left field by Ramsey.

The Billikens exploded for four runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 5-4 lead and the win. Adrienne May and Beth Puttcamp scored early in the inning. May reached on a fielder's choice while Puttcamp pinch ran for Adrie Boggars, who singled to left field. Kerri Higgins and Bohnenstiehl picked up RBI credit on the runs.

An error by Skyhawk third baseman Moffit sealed the win for Saint Louis as Higgins and Melissa Quist scored on the play. Quist reached base on a fielder's choice.

Bohnenstiehl picked up the win in game two with five strikeouts and no hits in 2.2 innings pitched. She relieved Kristin Rossi in the fourth inning. Rossi had three strikeouts and gave up four runs and four hits. She walked four batters.

Nicole Davis pitched the entire game for the Skyhawks and drops to 4-4 on the season. She had three strikeouts and gave up nine hits in the game. The team returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. against EIU.
