Skyhawks sweep Tigers, 3-0

It was another beat-down for the UTM volleyball team Friday against Tennessee State. The Skyhawks won the match in three straight games and remain atop the OVC.

“We played hard and stayed focused throughout this match,”said UTM volleyball coach Chris Rushing.

Game one left TSU to just sit and stare as the ‘hawks led by Natalie Klevan doubled the score on the helpless Tigers and took the game 30-14.

In game two, it was more of the same.

The Skyhawks took the lead and never looked back. UTM took game two by the final score of 30-22.

The Tigers left for intermission hoping to formulate a game plan and get back into the match. UTM Coach Chris Rushing planned out the demise of TSU and the Skyhawks stuck to the plan.

In game three, the ‘hawks were untouchable and almost doubled up the score again. The Tigers were sent packing from the field house with Martin taking the game 30-18 and the match 3-0.

The Skyhawks were led offensively by Klevan with 11 kills; and Jamie Fitzwater with 11 kills and a service ace.

The Skyhawk defense was led by Stephanie Dubach who had 20 digs.

With 20 digs in the match, senior Stefanie Dubach, from Geneva, Ind., climbs to the top of the career list for most digs as a Skyhawk with 1,196. Dubach replaces Carrie Smith (1993-96) who had 1,187 career digs.

The Skyhawks are now 13-4 overall and 8-0 in the OVC. They are ranked number one in the OVC for the fifth consecutive week and will face Eastern Illinois Friday and Southeast Missouri State on Saturday.
