Skyhawks sweep double header, 3-2 on the week

The Skyhawk baseball team improved their record to 4-7, recording three wins over the past seven days.

The first of the three wins came Saturday in a double header against Bradley University, where the Skyhawks went 4-2, and 5-2 on the day.

Picking up the win on the mound was freshman Ben Meador, who held the Braves to two runs, struck out four and only allowed seven hits over six innings. Sophomore Scott Massey got his first save of the season, giving up one hit and one walk, and striking out one in one inning.

Senior Bryant Jones led the offense, going two for three at the plate and scoring two runs. Sophomore Brett Spivey and Junior Bryan Berryman were each credited with an RBI.

The second game was a nail biter, coming down to the last at bat.

The Braves jumped out to an early 2-0 lead by the second inning, but those would be the only runs Bradley put on the board. UTM started their scoring in the fourth, with a solo homer by Berryman.

The Braves held the Skyhawks at one until the seventh when the last inning heroics kicked in.

With one out, Freshman Nick Luper tied up the game after reaching base on a fielder’s choice and scoring on the single by Junior Nick Bruner.

With two men on, Junior Hunter Hart hit a massive walk-off bomb, winning the game, 5-2.

Sophomore Justin Bryant was toxic on the mound, allowing only three walk and striking out six in seven innings.

Things didn’t go as well on Sunday for the Skyhawks in the third game of the series, dropping a 20-5 loss to the Braves. Skyhawk pitchers struggled all afternoon, combining to give up 20 earned runs on 16 hits. The six also gave up five home runs and 15 walks.

Sophomore Brett Spivey, however, led the offense with his second home run on the season. He was also two for four at the plate, drove in four, and picked up his third double. The Skyhawks got their revenge against Belmont on Tuesday, picking up their third win, 5-3. The Bruins had defeated UTM on Feb. 25 in a slugfest, 16-12.

Belmont took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but the Skyhawks came back and scored two in the third when Jones doubled to center field with two outs to bring in Hart, who reached on a single. Senior Adam Salter drove in Jones with a single.

The Skyhawks added two more runs in the fifth, when Jones hit a two-run homer to left field.

Belmont attempted a comeback in the seventh inning, but were still down by one, 4-3. UTM padded the score in the ninth, adding one run on two Belmont errors.

Jones led the Skyhawks at the plate, once again, going three for four with three RBIs.

The Skyhawks closed out the seven day stretch with a 9-6 loss, in an unscheduled game, against the V-Hawks of Viterbo University, Thursday afternoon.

Once again, the Skyhawks had problems on the mound with four pitchers giving up nine earned runs, and only striking out seven.

Going two for four on the afternoon were Salter and Jones, who also scored two of the five runs. Spivey went three for five with one RBI and one run. Junior Clayton Pittman led the team in RBIs with two.

The Skyhawks will travel to the University of Arkansas-Little Rock this weekend for a three game series. The UALR Trojans are 5-3 on the season. The first pitch is scheduled for Friday night at 6 p.m.
