Skyhawks split exhibition games

The University of Tennessee at Martin dropped a 1-0 decision to Western Kentucky Saturday afternoon in a soccer exhibition match at Skyhawk Field. This was the second and final scrimmage of the season for the Skyhawks.

The game quickly proved to be a defensive battle with few shots being taken and most of the action happening in the midfield. At halftime UTM had five shots while WKU had four.

Action picked up in the second half when WKU's Joslin Roach found the back of the net for a goal. Roach caught a cross from Crystal Chapo on the right side of the goal and fired from six yards out.

UTM still out-shot WKU in the second half, 7-5. Senior Sherrie Weeks led UTM in shots with four, while Amy King had three shots. Chapo led WKU with two shots.

The loss comes after the Skyhawks beat Cumberland University this past Wednesday in Lebanon, 7-1. Ginger Parson led the team with three goals while Dani Myrick had two.

Christina Moore and Katie Jackson each chipped in one goal. UTM opens its 2002 campaign at 3 p.m., Friday Aug. 30 at Skyhawk Field against the University of Louisville.
