Skyhawks spank Lady Governors


Seniors Julie Young and Torre Thomas combined for 41 points and 13 rebounds to lead UTM to a 66-55 victory over visiting Eastern Kentucky Saturday afternoon in the Elam Center.

Young piled up 23 points by hitting six of 10 from the field and knocking down 11 of 13 free throw attempts. Thomas turned in a career-high 18 points.

Freshman Andreika Jackson rounded out the Skyhawk double-digit scorers with 14 points and seven rebounds.

The Skyhawks improve to 7-11 overall and 4-4 in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Skyhawks have won the last three meetings against EKU in the Elam Center. EKU falls to 8-11 overall and 4-4 in the OVC.

"We led from beginning to end and we came out early and set the tone," said Skyhawk co-head coach Gary Van Atta.

The Skyhawks outscored EKU 23-9 on second-chance points. The Skyhawks also outrebounded EKU 34-29.

The Skyhawks cruised to a 28-15 lead by halftime and led by as many as 18 points in the second half.

Eastern Kentucky relied on 21 points from guard Katie Kelly and 18 points from Fatai Hala'api'api. EKU also converted on 12 of 16 free throws for 75 percent.

The Skyhawks return to OVC play Thursday, Feb. 5 when they travel to Southeast Missouri State. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
