Skyhawks slip to Bruins in slugfest

If you ever wonder what's in the recipe for an old fashion slugfest ask baseball players from Belmont and the University of Tennessee at Martin.

The two teams took advantage of adverse weather conditions and a strong wind Wednesday afternoon at Skyhawk Field.

Belmont escaped with a 16-12 win over the Skyhawks and remained undefeated after seven games. The Skyhawks fell to 1-5 with the loss.

The Skyhawks return to action this weekend when they host Bradley University in a three-game series beginning Saturday at noon with a doubleheader. The two teams will play a single, 9-inning game, beginning at 1 p.m., Sunday.

Belmont racked up 17 hits off five Skyhawk pitchers and hit five home runs. For the Skyhawks, the visiting Bruins did the most damage in the top of the eighth inning when they scored seven runs.

The Skyhawks enjoyed a 12-6 lead going into the top of the seventh inning, but Belmont fought its way back scoring 10 unanswered runs.

The Skyhawks relied on three hits and two RBI from catcher Brett Spivey. Senior second baseman Bryant Jones also continued to hit the ball well. Jones went 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBI. Both Spivey and Jones hit home runs in the contest.

Shortstop Nick Brunner and third baseman Brett Hall had two hits each. Brunner drove in two runs. Senior designated hitter Adam Salter was 1-for-3 at the dish with a double and two RBI. The Skyhawks roughed up five Belmont pitchers and banged out 15 hits and two home runs.

John Webster was the winning pitcher for Belmont. Dustin Summers was tagged for the pitching loss.
