Skyhawks place 10th at Harris Invitational

The UTM golf team finished 10th in the 2002 Harris Invitational Tournament hosted by Southeast Missouri State University Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 9-10.

The Skyhawks turned in first- and second-round scores of 295 and a third-round score of 284 for a three-round total of 874.

The Skyhawks picked up their game during the third round with the 284 which was good enough for fourth place in the final round.

"I am pleased with the way we played during the final round," said Jerry Carpenter, UTM's new head golf coach. "You just can't make up 12-15 strokes in the final round of the tournament."

Jamie Ball and Scott Carpenter led the team during the first round with a 70 and 71 respectively. In the second round, Andy Burris led the team with a 71. Ball turned in a 74 and finished with a 70 in the third round to lead the team with a three-day score of 214, just four shots over par.

“We didn't play the way we are capable of playing the first day,” Carpenter said.

Carpenter and Burris finished the three-round tournament with 219 each, while Heath Prescott finished with a 224. Freshman Reise McCoy, a freshman walk-on who shot impressive scores during the team qualifying rounds, shot 229.

“Some of the guys had trouble putting on the greens, others had trouble putting the ball in place and had to take some shots,” Carpenter said.

“I think we did a lot of good things in this first tournament,” the coach said.

Eastern Illinois won the team trophy with an 852, while Saint Louis University was second with 853. Evan Frederick, from Saint Louis University, was the tournament medalist with a two under 206.

The Skyhawks will return to action Sept. 16-17 when they play in the Gulf Coast Collegiate Classic at Bay St. Louis, Miss.

Nichols State University will host the 12-team tournament.
