Skyhawks layeth smackdown on Panthers 42-14


The UTM Sky hawks rolled to a 42-14 victory Thursday night against Kentucky Wesleyan. The team had almost 400 yards of total offense including a 92-yard touchdown pass that ranked as the second longest in UT Martin football history.

The team came out strong with a Brady Wahlberg 33-yard touchdown pass to running back Sam Berrien.

This capped a two play, 39 second drive to put the Skyhawks up 7-0 with 7:42 left in the first half and the 'hawks never looked back.

The second quarter was all UTM as they went on a 28 point scoring frenzy. Andrew Staten scored on a 10 yard run with 8:52 left in the half, capping a four play, 37-yard drive.

Marcus Ross hit paydirt next for the Skyhawks with a six yard run to make the score 21-0 with 6:50 remaining in the half.

Sam Berrien scored his second touchdown of the night on a one yard run with 3:48 to go in the half, and Troy Phillips continued the roll with a 92-yard reception from Wahlberg to make the half-time score 35-0 UTM.

The Skyhawk offense was three of five for 144 yards in the first half, with 21 rushes for 125 yards. UTM had 26 plays for 269 yards. The Skyhawk defense recorded three sacks, two interceptions and a fumble recovery and held the Panthers to 93 yards of total offense.

The second half started off where the first half ended when Damien Harris scored on a one-yard run to cap off the longest UTM scoring series of the night, a seven play, 29 yard drive with 3:09 left in the third quarter.

The panthers refused to go quietly into the night, mounting a nine play, 86-yard drive ending with Nathan East receiving a nine yard pass from Keith Nelson with four seconds left in the half.

Nelson then went on the receiving end, catching a 14-yard touchdown pass from Justin McKim with 1:20 left to go in the game.

UTM then took over possession and ran out the clock to improve to a 2-1 record on the season, KY Wesleyan falls to 0-3. “This was a great win tonight,” said UTM Coach Sam McCorkle. “We keep getting better we ran the ball extremely well tonight.”

The Skyhawks were 3 for 6 in the air for 144 yards, 249 yards on 49 rushes for a total offense of 393 yards.

UTM defense recorded four sacks, four interceptions and one fumble recovery and held the Panthers to 206 yards of total offense on the night.

The Skyhawks were lead on the ground by Arthur Bryant, who carried the ball nine times for 83 yards, and in the air by Brady Wahlberg who was 3-5 for 144 yards. Perez Boyd led the defense with two interceptions.

The Skyhawks now look to next week's date with the Samford Bulldogs in Birmingham, Ala.
