Skyhawks knock off Iowa State


The Skyhawk softball team recently competed in the Louisville Tournament in Louisville, Ky., sporting a 1-2 record for the weekend.

Tennessee-Martin faced Iowa State University, University of Louisville and Kent State University.

In the first contest of the weekend, the Skyhawks squeezed by Iowa State 5-4 in extra innings for their first and only win of the tournament. Freshman Fallon Lowery carried the Skyhawks to the win, posting four RBI in her four at bats.

Sophomore pitcher Kelly Swafford was credited with her first win of the season, allowing only one hit against seven batters faced in two innings. Swafford relieved senior Nicole Davis in the seventh inning.

The Skyhawks faced Kent State in their second game of the weekend. KSU won 9-5.

Junior pitcher Allison Buckley fell to an overall 2-2 record in the 2004 season.

UT Martin did well at the plate with 10 hits in 31 at bats, but stranded eight base runners.

In day two of the tournament, UT Martin finished in a disappointing loss, falling to Louisville 12-2. UT Martin struggled at the plate with only three hits in 19 at bats.

Louisville scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back. UT Martin freshman Megan Mizell was credited with her second loss of the season. She is now 2-2 at the mound.

The Skyhawks are now 8-7. The doubleheader set for Tuesday against visiting Western Kentucky at Bettye Giles Field has been canceled. The games will be rescheduled.
