Skyhawks have 49 hits against Southeastern Louisiana


It looked like a great day for college baseball, but with the temperatures in the low 40s and the wind blowing, it was more like football weather. The Skyhawks racked up 49 hits in three games against Southeastern Louisiana, but only put one victory in the win column.

The Skyhawk baseball team completed its three-game series against Southeastern Louisiana Sunday afternoon March 9th. The Skyhawks won the first game 22-6 that Saturday, but dropped the second game 13-12. The Skyhawks also lost the final game of the series 14-8.

The second game of the series was suspended Saturday afternoon because of darkness. The game was completed Sunday afternoon as the Skyhawks failed to score again in the bottom of the eighth.In game three the Skyhawks jumped out to a 7-0 advantage after the second inning. Dan Stephens and Adam Salter fueled the offense. Stephens went 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBI. Salter was 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI.

Brady Nighswonger and Ryan Bethel also had two hits each for the Skyhawks in the game.

Southeastern scored eight runs in the top of the third inning and forced starter Justin Bryant off the mound.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Skyhawks tied the game at 8-all when Stephens led off the inning with a single. Salter followed with a single to right that allowed Stephens to advance to third. Donnie Corey collected the RBI on a fielder's choice that plated Stephens.

The Lions, from Hammond. La., broke the tie with a run in the top of the sixth. They also scored four more runs in the top of the eighth inning.

The Skyhawks used six pitchers in the contest. Kyle McBride took the loss for the Skyhawks, while Brad Miller claimed his first win of the season for the Lions. The Skyhawks banged out 15 hits in the game, including three for extra bases.

In game one of the series, the Skyhawks had 19 hits and exploded for 22 runs. Bryant Jones led the offense with two hits in two at bats and six RBI.

Designated hitter Loren Turner was two-for-two at the plate. He hit his first home run of the season and drove in three runs.

Nighswonger was three-for-four with a pair of RBI and Hunter Hart was three-for-five with two RBI and four runs scored.

Jared Robinson earned his first pitching win of the season for the Skyhawks. He threw four innings and gave up six hits and two earned runs.

He struck out two and walked two. He's now 1-1 on the season. The Skyhawks hit the ball well in the second game of the series. Once again the team racked up 15 hits.

Bethel came through with four hits in four trips to the plate.

Jones homered in the game and collected four RBI.

Kelly Davis also drove in four runs with two hits in three trips to the dish.

The Skyhawks fell behind early in the game 6-1, but scored at least one run in the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

The game was called in the bottom of the eighth inning because of darkness.

The Skyhawks trailed 13-12, but had a runner on first with one out when the game resumed Sunday.

Corey was the losing pitcher in the contest. He worked two innings and gave up eight hits and four earned runs.

He didn't walk anyone and struck out three. He fell to 1-2 on the season.
