Skyhawks fourth seed in OVC


The Tennessee-Martin women's tennis team advances to the Ohio Valley Conference tournament as the No. 4 seeded team. The Skyhawks will play No. 5 seeded Eastern Kentucky at 11 a.m., Friday, April 16 at the Centennial Sportsplex in Nashville.

If the Skyhawks win they will meet the winner of the Murray State (No. 1)-Morehead State (No. 8) match. The second round match is set for 4 p.m., April 17. The championship match is slated for 4 p.m., Sunday, April 18.

The Skyhawk women finished their OVC slate with a 7-3 record. The losses were to Murray State, Tennessee Tech (No. 2) and Samford (No. 3).

The Skyhawks defeated Eastern Kentucky, 7-0, earlier this month at the Skyhawk Tennis Courts.

The Skyhawk lineup includes undefeated players Katrina Domela (9-0) at No. 4 singles, Gayatri Ramesh (7-0) at No. 5 singles and Ana Bakran and Elly Shearman (3-0) at No. 2 doubles. The doubles team of Domela and Sari Nortje are also undefeated at No. 2 doubles (3-0).

The No. 3 doubles team of Jeanne de Wet and Ramesh are also undefeated with a 6-0 worksheet.

Other first round matches include No. 2 Tennessee Tech vs. No. 7 Eastern Illinois and No. 3 Samford vs. No. 6 Jacksonville State.

The Men’s tennis team wrapped up its season this week, dropping three consecutive OVC matches to Murray State, 4-1, Wednesday and then suffered a 6-1 setback against Tennessee Tech Thursday in Nashville. The Skyhawks also dropped a 4-3 decision to visiting Eastern Kentucky Saturday morning.

They finish the season with a 5-14 overall record and 2-7 OVC record.
