Skyhawks fall to Memphis in night game


The Skyhawk baseball team dropped a 5-4 decision to visiting Memphis Wednesday night at Elam Stadium in Union City.

The loss was the sixth time the Skyhawks have lost a one-run decision and the 14th time the Skyhawks have played in a one-run game this season.

Robbie Goss singled in the top of the 11th inning and scored on Alex Fennell single to left field.

Fennell had three hits in the game, while Goss went 2-for-5 at the plate.

Memphis opened the game with a K.K. Chalmers home run in the first inning.

The Skyhawks took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with two runs.

Lance Renton opened the inning with a double and scored on Jason Hockaday’s single up the middle.

Hockaday scored on a wild pitch. Renton went 3-for-5 in the game with a run scored and an RBI.

Memphis tied the game in the top of the fourth, but the Skyhawks answered back in the bottom half of the inning with a run to take a 4-3 lead.

Memphis tied the game at 4-4 in the top half of the eighth inning. Kyle Norrid scored the tying run when he scored from third on a throwing error.

Norrid reached base on an error and stole second base. He advanced to third when Joey Lieberman fouled out down the third base line.

Dusty Davis (2-0) picked up the pitching win for Memphis. He pitched three innings and gave up one hit. He struck out three batters. Josh Langley picked up his first save of the season.

Micky Dobson suffered the loss and falls to 2-3 on the year for the Skyhawks. Dobson pitched five innings in relief of Eric Walker. He gave up three hits and one earned run. He struck out two. The Skyhawks will returned to Ohio Valley Conference action Saturday against the Eastern Kentucky Colonels.
