Skyhawks fall to Eagles, pound Billikens 14-4

The UTM baseball team went one for four over the past week, dropping a three games series to Ohio Valley Conference member Morehead State, and picked up a win against visiting St. Louis University Wednesday afternoon.

The three game series against Morehead was one the highest scoring set of games all season, with the games ending 12-13, 6-11, and 5-22.

The first game found the Eagles jumping out to the early lead, scoring four runs in the first two innings. The Skyhawks came right back and pulled ahead with five runs in the top of the third, with senior Hunter Hart hitting a massive three-run homer.

The other two runs came off a homerun by junior Brian Berryman. The Skyhawks also added one run in the fifth when senior Adam Salter scored on a wild pitch.

The Eagles held the Skyhawks at six, while adding nine more runs of their own, until the eighth.

The Skyhawks started a six run rally when junior Nick Bruner went yard, bringing in freshman Douglas Nicodemus with him. Sophomore Brett Spivy then knocked in senior Bryant Jones. Salter, Hart, and Spivy then scored on an error.

The Skyhawks were unfortunately unable to keep the momentum from the eighth going and the game ended, Morehead on top, 12-13.

The second game of the series was not as close, but still resulted in the same outcome, with the Skyhawks defeated, 6-11.

The Eagles tacked on six runs in the top of the first and never looked back, adding four more over the next two innings.
Hart hit his second homer of the series, putting the first run on the board for the Skyhawks in the third. Spivy added two with a 2 RBI single in the sixth.

Hart hit one more bomb in the seventh, a two run shot, scoring Jones, who had just got his RBI for the day by bringing in freshman Brian Fisher with a single.

The three runs weren’t enough to take the victory away from the Eagles.

The third and final game of the series, once again, found the Skyhawks on the losing end of the battle, 5-22.

The Eagles racked up 22 runs on 23 hits, including seven homers.

The Skyhawks’ five runs came from Hart, Salter, Jones, Luper, and senior Kayo Anderson.

UTM broke it’s 3 game losing streak against the Billikens Wednesday afternoon.

The Skyhawks racked up 14 hits on the afternoon, with an impressive seven run fourth inning. The seven runs added to the four put on the board in the first brought the score to 4-11, with the Skyhawks on top.

Bruner hit his second home run of the season, a three run shot bringing in Berryman and Spivy. Junior Mike Fabrizio and Jones scored earlier in the inning, with Fabrizio coming in on a single from Hart, and Jones stealing home.

The Skyhawks added one more run in the sixth when Spivy scored on a double to center by Berryman.

Padding the lead even more, UTM added three runs during the seventh inning in which the Skyhawk batters faced three different pitchers.

The Eagles were unable to put anymore runs on the board after the fifth inning, and the game ended with the Skyhawks on top, 4-14.

Senior Jarrad Robinson, who came in during the fifth, picked up his first win of the season.

Robinson gave up no earned runs, one walk and only five hits on the game.

Bruner led the team with five RBIs, going two for three at the plate. Spivy and Berryman each knocked in two runs a piece, and Jones, Hart, and freshman Scott McLean each had one RBI.

The Skyhawks record is now 10-20 overall, 3-6 in the OVC. The team returns to conference play this weekend with a three game series against the Eastern Illinois Panthers.

The Skyhawks split a series with EIU, picking up two wins earlier this season.

The first game of Saturday’s doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the single game on Sunday will also start at 1.
