Skyhawks fall in close one, 71-70

There were high hopes Tuesday night as the Murray State Racers came to the Elam center for an OVC contest.

This is the second straight game where the Lady Skyhawks had a chance to pull out a close game in the final seconds, and it is the second straight time that the Lady Skyhawks failed to do so.

With a little less than six seconds to play senior, Julie Young missed a shot to give the Lady Skyhawks the victory. Murray State came away with the 71-70 victory. This moves the Racers to a 6-7 record in the OVC while the Skyhawks fall to a 5-8 OVC record. With three regular season games left, both teams are competing for a spot in the top eight teams of the conference in order to make the OVC tournament.

Young tied her career-high with 23 points for the Skyhawks. Freshman Andreika Jackson turned in a career-high 19 points against the Lady Racers.

Both Young and Jackson grabbed nine rebounds each. Junior Danielle Page also had double digits with 10 points. The Skyhawks return to action Saturday, Feb. 21, when they host Tennessee State. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. in the Elam Center.

The trouble continued for the Skyhawks as the men took the court against Murray State. The Skyhawks experienced some shooting trouble, as they could not buy a bucket against the Racers. The Skyhawks shot 23.8 percent from the field, hitting just 15 of 63 attempts. From the three-point arch, the Skyhawks hit two of 12 attempts for 16.7 percent. This left the Skyhawks coming out on the bottom end of a 77-44 loss.

With the loss, the Skyhawks fall to 3-10 in the OVC. Murray State improves to 11-2 in the league.

Junior Jeremy Kelly led the Skyhawks with 21 points. Kelly went five-for-five at the line, but was seven for 23 from the field while Cuthbert Victor led Murray State with 14 points. Antione Whelchel netted a dozen points and grabbed 10 rebounds. In all, 12 Racers each scored two points or more.

However, the Skyhawks best effort came from the charity stripe as they knocked down 12 of 16 free throws giving them a 75 percent average at the free throw line.

The Skyhawks' next game is Saturday, Feb. 21, at 6 p.m. when they host Tennessee State as the second game of the double header that night. The game will be played in the Elam Center.
