Skyhawks fail to upset Lady Eagles

With a little more than one minute to play, the UTM Skyhawk women's basketball team found itself poised to upset Tennessee Tech.

Junior Danielle Page hit a free throw to cut Tech's lead to five points, 65-60, with 1:18 to play. The Skyhawks called a timeout after the free throws to set their strategy, but Tech's Emily Christian spoiled the play with a layup with 57 seconds to play. Tech freshman Kendall Cavin sealed Tech's win, 70-60, when she drained a three-pointer with 20 seconds to play in the game.

Christian led Tech with 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Cavin netted 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

Senior Julie Young turned in one of her best efforts of the season for the Skyhawks with 18 points and seven rebounds, but it wasn't enough to offset Christian and Tech.

With the loss, the Skyhawks fall to 5-7 in the OVC and 8-14 overall. Tech clinched a spot in the OVC tournament with the win and improved to 9-3 in the league and 14-9 overall.

Tech used the three-pointer to claim a 38-26 advantage at the half. Arleigh Brackin hit three of the 11 in the first half, while Cavin hit a pair of threes in the first 20 minutes of play.

The Skyhawks hit five of 18 threes in the game and freshman Andreika Jackson teamed with Young to dominate the inside game. Jackson finished with nine points and a team-high eight rebounds.

The Skyhawks return to action Tuesday, Feb. 17, when they host Murray State. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. in the Elam Center. The home game is the first of four straight home games to close out the regular season for the Skyhawks.

Tennessee State comes to town Saturday. Tip is set for 4 p.m. Eastern Illinois and Southeast Missouri State will visit next week.
