Skyhawks clinch fifth win of the season vs. APSU

The Skyhawks shutout Austin Peay State University 4-0 Sunday in their first game in the OVC Conference.

The Skyhawks were led by Freshman Dani Myrick, who had a hat trick. A hat trick is three or more goals in one game.

Myrick first scored 20 minutes into the first half off a breakaway up the left side of the field. For her second goal she received a cross in the second half by Senior Forward Sherrie Weeks.

Her third goal came off a shot from Weeks, less than two minutes after her previous score in that half.

“I really opened up more, and felt confident to take the shots,” said Myrick.

Sophomore Amy King scored the final goal with minutes left in the game off a pass in front of the goal by Sophomore Rachel Callahan.

“I think our performance was phenomenal,” remarks King after the game.

The Skyhawks truly have had a record-breaking year. Five is the most wins ever by the Skyhawks since beginning in 1998.
This game tied for second most number of shots in a game ever, 37. That record was set earlier last week in a game against Lipscomb.

The record for number of shots in a game is 39 which occurred against Jackson State also this year.

This game also witnessed the second least amount of shots allowed. Austin Peay were only allowed six shots.
Besides team records, this year has also witnessed many individual accomplishments. With Dani Myrick’s hat trick this past weekend, she now holds the second most goals scored.

Former player Kim Thompson holds the record with four in a game four years ago against North Alabama. Sherrie Weeks took 12 shots last week at Lipscomb to take the record of most shots.

It was previously seven, also done by Thompson in 1998. The last individual record to also occur Sunday against Austin Peay was for assists. Weeks gave two for Myrick to complete. This tied the two assists former player Amanda Cadell had last year playing Middle Tennessee.

The Skyhawks, now 5-2-2 for the season play Memphis 4 p.m. today at the Skyhawk field. They continue at home with a game Sunday at 1 p.m. against Tenn. Tech.

UTM is currently ranked second in the OVC and off to the best start the team has had in its brief five year history at UTM. The Skyhawks finished fourth last year in the OVC at the end of the regular season.
