Skyhawks’ bats come alive over break


The UTM baseball team went 1-5 over the spring break, picking up a win over St. Louis University and falling to Wake Forest, Western Illinois, Missouri, Vanderbilt, and Lambuth.

During first of the the five game Easton Classic in Millington, Tenn., the Skyhawks held off Wake Forest for eight innings. The Skyhawks opened the eighth inning with back-to-back doubles and jumped out front 1-0.

In the top of the ninth inning, Wake Forest scored five runs off Skyhawk pitchers Jarrad Robinson and Dustin Summers. Western Illinois defeated the Skyhawks 10-7 Saturday afternoon. The Skyhawks jumped out in front 4-2 after four innings of play, but Western Illinois scored three runs in the top of the fifth and two more runs in the top of the sixth and the top of the ninth.

The Skyhawks suffered a 7-3 loss to Missouri They scored one run in the top of the sixth and two runs in the top of the ninth inning. Salter doubled in the top of the ninth and scored in the inning.

The Skyhawks took a 5-2 lead against nationally ranked Vanderbilt into the seventh inning, but two consecutive balks proved costly as the host Commodores rallied for a 6-5 college baseball win over the Skyhawks Tuesday afternoon in Nashville.

Meador pitched six innings, scattered eight hits and gave up two earned runs. He walked two and struck out three. Lambuth University used three pitchers to shut down the Skyhawks in a 13-1 win.

Hunter Hart and senior Bryant Jones had the only two hits in the contest for the Skyhawks.

Hart spoiled the no-hitter in the third inning when he singled up the middle. Jones followed with a double to right center field that scored Clayton Pittman who reached base when he was hit by a pitch.

UTM piled up 17 hits en route to an 8-3 win over the host Saint Louis University Billikens.

Senior Bryant Jones had four hits in the contest, while junior Brian Berryman went three-for-four at the plate with two doubles and three RBI. Senior Adam Salter went three-for-five with two RBI in the game.

Scott Massey earned the win. giving up one hit and one run. Justin Bryant also pitched three innings and never allowed a hit.

The Skyhawks open conference action this weekend when they travel to Charleston, Ill., to face host Eastern Illinois. They will play a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday.
