Skyhawks added to All-OVC Team

Three Skyhawk basketball players were named to the 2003-2004 All-Ohio Valley Conference teams last week: Sophomore Jared Newson, Senior Julie Young, and Freshman Andreika Jackson.

Newson, the 6’5” guard/forward from Belleville, Ill., was named to the All-OV C third team. He averaged 19.2 points per game, and finished tied for second in the conference in scoring.

Newson also finished sixth in the OVC in steals and rebounds, with an average of 1.62 steals and 7.3 boards per game.

“This is a well deserving award for Jared,” said men’s basketball head coach Brett Campbell. “He certainly stepped up in the absence of a few players for us this season. He showed everyone that he could become one of the premier players in the league.”

Young was named to the All-OVC second team. The 6’1” forward from Clarksville, Tenn., averaged 13.9 points and 5.6 rebounds per game during conference play. She also shot over 83 percent from the line.

“Julie has been not only an excellent player here at Tennessee-Martin,” said women’s basketball head coach Gary Van Atta, “but also a model student. She will be very successful in her career, and I'm proud that she has been a Skyhawk for four years.”

Jackson, the 5’9” forward, was named to the All-OVC freshman team. During conference play, Jackson, who originally hails from Decatur, Ga., averaged 12.2 points, 8.8 rebounds, and finished second on the team with 22 steals.

“Andreika is a tremendous competitor," said Van Atta. "She is only going to get better in her next three years as a Skyhawk, I'm thrilled she is only a freshman.”
