Skyhawk women win home opener against Kentucky Wesleyan

UTM overcame the fatigue factor and double-digit scoring in women’s basketball from three Kentucky Wesleyan players to earn an 84-71 win Saturday afternoon in the Elam Center.

The Skyhawk women improved to 1-1 on the year with the win coming less than 24 hours from the loss Friday night to host Arkansas-Little Rock. Kentucky Wesleyan falls to 2-1 on the season.

Kentucky Wesleyan battled hard in the first half to tie the game three times in the first half, including the deadlock at 40-all at halftime.

Holly Mills led Kentucky Wesleyan with 19 first-half points, while UTM senior Tiffany Brundige tossed in 11 first-half points.

Turnovers haunted both teams in the first half. Kentucky Wesleyan committed 19 turnovers, while the Skyhawks turned the ball over 18 times.

Freshman Kristin Archie hit a three-pointer with 11:16 to go in the game and gave the Skyhawks the lead, 53-50, for good. The Skyhawks stretched the lead to a dozen points twice in the second half and with 50 seconds to play led by as many as 16 points.

Senior Julie Young, a preseason All-OVC selection, led the Skyhawks with 18 points. Brundige did not score in the second half and finished the game with 11 points.

Kentucky Wesleyan was led by Mills with 25 points, Courtney Roach with 15 points, and Rozalind Jones with a dozen points.

Skyhawk co-head coaches Kim and Gary Van Atta played 15 players in the game and eight of the 15 scored. The Skyhawks got 49 of their 84 points from players off the bench, while Kentucky Wesleyan managed just five points from its bench.

Both teams finished the game with 29 turnovers, while the Skyhawks won the rebounding battle, 31-30. Freshman Ardreika Jackson led the Skyhawks in the rebounding department with eight boards. She also had seven points.

The Skyhawks will take time off for Thanksgiving and return to action Dec. 3 when they travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., to square off against North Carolina's Lady Tar Heels.
