Skyhawk volleyball wins second consecutive OVC match


The UTM volleyball team claimed its second consecutive OVC win Friday night in Nashville as the Skyhawks blanked host Tennessee State 3-0.

UTM improves to 2-5 in the OVC and 4-17 overall, while TSU falls to 0-6 in the league and 4-13 overall. The Skyhawks return to action Friday night when they host Morehead State in Skyhawk Fieldhouse. The first serve is set for 7 p.m. The Skyhawks will also host Eastern Kentucky Saturday in the fieldhouse. Action gets under way at noon.

The Skyhawks turned in a .325 hitting percentage and 18 kills to win game one 30-23. The Skyhawks won game two 30-23 and game three 30-22.

Sophomore Rebecca Palmer led the Skyhawks with a .474 hitting percentage while, three Skyhawks turned in double-doubles (double figure kills and double figure digs). Seniors Heather Kea and Jamie Fitzwater posted double-doubles. Kea had 12 kills and 17 digs, while Fitzwater had 13 kills and 12 digs.

Junior Leigh Reiniche hit .312 and posted 14 kills and 11 digs. The Skyhawks finished the match with 53 kills and 62 digs. Junior setter Maribeth Hanneman, from the Nashville area, finished the three-game match with 41 of the Skyhawks 45 assists.

Tennessee State hit .173 in the match, and the Lady Tigers were led by Jennifer Corral with a .333 hitting percentage. Corral finished with 19 kills and 16 digs.
