Skyhawk tennis sweeps Alabama A&M Bulldogs


The Tennessee-Martin tennis teams picked up a couple of non-conference victories Friday afternoon when Alabama A&M came to town.

The Skyhawk women defeated Alabama A&M 7-0, while the Skyhawk men picked up a 5-2 win.

The Skyhawk women are now 8-4 overall this spring, while the men now sport a 4-11 overall won-loss record.

The Skyhawk women hosted Southeast Missouri State Monday (April 5) in an Ohio Valley Conference match.

Both the men's and women's teams return to action Tuesday, April 6 when they host Tennessee State at Skyhawk Tennis Courts. Matches get under way at 2 p.m.

In women's action against Alabama A&M, Elly Shearman, Sari Nortje, Katrina Domela and Ana Bakran picked up wins in singles action. With the win, Nortje improved to 10-1 on the year.

Gayatri Ramesh and Jeanne de Wet picked up wins in the singles action for the Skyhawks by default.

In doubles, the Skyhawks claimed the point as Domela and Nortje defeated Shaniek Pinder and Monique Jones 8-3.

Ramesh and de Wet defeated Jennifer Turner and L. London to give the Skyhawk women the two necessary wins for the lone doubles point.

In men's action against Alabama A&M, Gustavo Anzola, Ben Hatchwell, Lucas Tregansin, William taylor and Adolfo Anzola picked up wins in singles action.

Alabama A&M won the doubles point and claimed a point at No. 2 singles where Willis Mbandi needed three sets to beat Tennessee-Martin's Daniel McGuire, 7-5, 7-6 (10-7).
