Skyhawk softball sweeps Austin Peay


The Tennessee-Martin softball team closed out its regular season with a 10-2 win over Austin Peay Sunday, sweeping the Lady Govs 3-0 in this weekend's series.

The Skyhawks end the regular season with a record-setting 37-19 overall record and 18-7 mark in the Ohio Valley Conference.

With the win and an Eastern Illinois win over Tennessee Tech, the Skyhawks clinched second place in the OVC and earned a first round bye in the conference tournament later this week at Eastern Kentucky.

The Skyhawks will play the winner of the Tennessee Tech (No. 3) vs. Southeast Missouri State (No. 6) game Thursday, May 13. Game times have not been set.

The OVC tournament is a double-elimination tournament with the championship game set for Saturday, May 15 at Hood Field on the EKU campus in Richmond, Ky. EKU won the OVC regular season with a 22-4 conference record.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the second inning when the Skyhawks were the first to make the board. Senior Sarah Daws hit a double to right field, scoring fellow senior Angela Baize.

The Skyhawks scored five runs in the third. Nicole Davis singled down the left field line, driving in Brandy Whalen and Jennifer Young.

Emily Webb picked up her seventh home run of the season and three RBI to go with it. Her homer brought in Davis and Kristin Runyan.

The Skyhawks held the 6-0 lead until the top of the sixth. Austin Peay's Brianna Venable and Natasha Anderson hit back-to-back home runs to score the Lady Gov's only two runs of the day.

UT Martin ended the game early, scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the final score 10-2.
