Skyhawk soccer stomps Morehead, 10-3

UTM set the tone for the match in the first 36 seconds when Skyhawk Ginger Parson scored on an assist by Dani Myrick to lead the Skyhawks to a 10-3 win over visiting Morehead State. The Skyhawks’ 10 goals break the team’s record for goals in a match.

The record was previously seven, set Sept. 20 against Jackson State University. Nine of the 10 Skyhawk goals were scored in the first half.

With 12 seconds separating Dani Myrick’s first goal at 31:40 and Morehead State’s goal by Heidi Dickten at 31:52, the goals are the seventh fastest consecutive goals by opposing teams in NCAA history.

With the win, UTM improves to 8-2-2 on the season and 3-0 in Ohio Valley Conference play. Morehead State falls to 1-9-0 and 0-3 in the OVC.

The Skyhawks hit the road for the next three weeks, beginning with a match Wednesday at Belmont University in Nashville.

Myrick picked up her second hat trick of the season in the match.

She had three goals and two assists in the match. With her eight points in the match, Myrick ties the UTM record for points in a game.

Kim Thompson holds the record with four goals for eight points against North Alabama in 1998.

Parson, Sherrie Weeks and Katie Jackson had two goals each in the match. Sophomore Amy King chipped in one goal and two assists.

Rachel Callahan, Meghann Jordan and Tavi Renier had one assist each.

Senior Tracy Tenholder had two goals in the match for Morehead State while Dickten added one goal.

Alison Connley and Christina Moore had one assist each in the match.

The biggest scoring explosion came in the middle of the first half when the two teams combined for four goals in less than four minutes.

“We gave away the shutout, which was our ultimate goal, but we still played great,” said UTM head coach Nathan Pifer. “We made a statement that we are in this conference to stay.”

Morehead out-shot the Skyhawks 21-17 in the match, but UTM’s defense held tight, holding the Eagles to three goals.

Caryn Scheufler had nine saves and allowed three goals for the Skyhawks in 61 minutes. Freshman Megan Dempsey came in to finish the game for UTM, picking up two saves.

Jennifer Miller and Sarah Clark split time in the goal for Morehead State.

Both allowed five goals with Clark making four saves. This was the fifth meeting between the conference rivals. UTM now holds the series advantage, 3-2.

The Skyhawks beat the Eagles 4-1 in their meeting last season.

“This is a different team,” said Pifer.

“We’re in this conference and will represent it well. We want people to take notice.”
