Skyhawk rifle team nabs fourth


The University of Tennessee at Martin team finished fourth in this past weekend’s Tennessee Tech James Newkirk Invitational. The Skyhawks, led by Devra Harvey, racked up 5,846 points.

Host Tennessee Tech claimed first in the meet named in honor of former Tech rifle coach James Newkirk who led the team to three national titles. Murray State was second, while Jacksonville State was third overall.

Harvey led the Skyhawk shooters with a 373 in the air rifle division and an 1,129 in the smallbore competition. Byron Godbee shot an 370 in the air rifle and 1,110 in the smallbore, while Jennie Fladebo fired a 369 in the air rifle and 1,063 in the smallbore.

Jessie Wilson turned in a 364 in the air rifle and a 1,432 in the smallbore.

The Skyhawks air rifle score was 1,476, while the four combined for a 4,370 in smallbore.

Other Skyhawks shooting in the Newkirk Invitational included Brian Stiles with a 371 in the air rifle and a 1,073 in the smallbore; Becky Latimer with a 1,069 in the smallbore; and Rachel Toy with a 342 in the air rifle and a 977 in the smallbore. The team’s total score is determined by adding the four shooters’ score in air rifle and then adding the four smallbore scores together.

In the Newkirk Invitational an “aggregate” score was used. The aggregate score was determined by adding the air rifle score and the smallbore score.
