Skyhawk Golfers finish eighth in Tri-State Classic

Lipscomb University won the rain-shortened, 18-hole Tri-State Classic Tuesday at the Winfield Dunn Golf Course at Pickwick Landing State Park in Hardin County.

Lipscomb shot a 291 (five-member team) to finish first in the 15-team tournament.

Ohio Valley Conference foes Murray State and Southeast Missouri State finished tied for second with a 292.

Eastern Illinois, also an OVC member, finished tied for fifth with a 298.

Tournament host Tennessee-Martin, an OVC member, finished tied for eighth with a 299.

James Porter, from North Alabama, was the tournament's top medalist with a four-under 69.

Kyle Maxwell, Eastern Illinois, shot a two-under par 70 and Lipscomb's Cody Hale fired a one-under par 71.

The top three golfers were the only golfers in the field of 86 to turn in scorecards below par.

Tennessee-Martin was led by Heath Prescott with an even-par 72. Prescott finished tied for fourth in the tournament.

Riese Kelly and Scott Carpenter each turned in rounds of 75, while Trey McNeil and Hunter Prescott turned in rounds of 77 each.

Skyhawk golfers Jason Bell, Brad Walters and Ryan Scearce competed in the tournament as individuals and turned in rounds of 76, 77 and 79, respectively.

Rain and inclement weather shortened the two-day, 54-hole tournament to a round of 18 holes Tuesday.

The Skyhawk golfers return to action March 17-20 when they compete in Morehead State Invitation in Ocala, Fla.
