Skyhawk baseball player earns honorable mention

Tennessee-Martin second baseman Bryant Jones was recently named an honorable mention All-American by CollegeBaseballinsider.com.

Jones is the first Skyhawk to earn NCAA Division I All-American honors.

Jones ranked among national leaders with a .425 batting average in 2004, the highest ever for a Tennessee-Martin player in Division I play. A first-team All-OVC selection, he recorded 32 multiple-hit outings while registering a league-high 96 hits, scoring 55 runs and driving in 33 more in the process.

The Waddy, Ky., native also had 13 doubles and six home runs, posting on-base and slugging percentages of .472 and .588, respectively. In addition, the senior second baseman went 18-for-21 in stolen base attempts.

He set new Tennessee-Martin career records for most games played (191), most at-bats (651) and most hits (218), while also establishing new single-season marks for most hits, at-bats (226) and total bases (133).

Two other Ohio Valley Conference players, Eastern Kentucky's Stephen Carter and Southeast Missouri State's Brad Smith, also received honorable mention All-American honors by CollegeBaseballinsider.com.

Carter was named OVC Player of the Year after ranking among league leaders in six offensive categories this past season. Smith was an All-OVC first team selection as a relief pitcher after shattering Southeast's single-season and career records with 11 saves.

Tennessee-Martin's last two All-Americans in baseball were Richard Craven, a second team selection in 1985 and Don Jackson a 1973 first team All-American.

Tennessee-Martin competed as an NCAA Division II school in the Gulf South Conference from 1972 to 1991.

In 1992, the baseball team played an independent Division II schedule.
