Six rifle members earn academic honors

Six members of the University of Tennessee at Martin rifle team received Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) All-Academic Awards at the recent NCAA championships at Murray State University, in Murray, Ky.

Among those receiving the All-Academic Awards were Byron Godbee, from Athens, Ala.; Devra Harvey, from Washington, Pa,; Amanda Karns, from Orion, Ill.; Brian Stiles, from Fort Mill, S.C.; Rachel Toy, from Columbia, Tenn.; and Jessie Wilson from Hickman, Ky.

For Stiles and Wilson this is the second time they have earned the prestigious honor. Karns has received the award the past four years.

In order to receive the All-Academic Award, shooters had to earn a 3.2 or better grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.

A year ago, seven Skyhawk shooters were recognized at the NCAA Championships with the academic award, the most from any single school in the country.

The UT Martin rifle team finished 23rd in the nation this past season. The Skyhawks had 4,389 points in the smallbore shooting and 1,530 points in the air rifle.

The smallbore and the air rifle scores are added together to determine the total points. UT Martin finished with 5,919 points. Alaska-Fairbanks finished first, while Xavier University was second. Murray State, also a member of the Ohio Valley Conference with Tennessee-Martin, finished third in the nation. "I am proud of this team for finishing 23rd in the nation," said Tennessee-Martin rifle coach Bob Beard. “We were in a rebuilding year and we were able to have some success. "I am even prouder that six members of the team were recognized at the NCAA championships for their academic accomplishments."
