SigEp embodies spirit of Dr. Seuss

A cat, a doctor, and a police man. These would appear to have very little in common, unless you are talking about the sixth annual "Read Across America" event.

Joining the familiar Cat in the Hat character this year is Ming-Na, better known as Dr. Chen on NBC's hit saga "ER," and Esai Morales, who plays Lt. Tony Rodriguez on ABC's "NYPD Blue". Read Across America has become the nation's largest single-day literary event, reaching out to youth both in the states and at US military bases world wide.

As part of the celebration, the brothers of the Tennessee Kappa chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon read to area schools. Theodor Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss, is a famous SigEp alum from the New Hampshire Alpha chapter at Dartmouth College.

To celebrate the event, several brothers from the chapter read to Martin Primary School students and a local daycare center. This has become an annual event for the Tennessee Kappa chapter.

“I really enjoy doing this,” said Brian Richie, a senior animal science major from Bolivar. “When I put that Cat in the Hat suit on and see that look in the kids’ eyes, it makes it all worthwhile.”

“This is a great program,” said Matt Crouch, a senior communications major from Paris. “Teaching kids to read is always a good thing, but when you get to have fun doing it and see the kids having fun learning, it really is an awesome feeling.”
