Showcasing musical pride with SAI musicale

Music fraternity for women highlight an evening of musical talents, sisterhood

Presenting their musicale for the public, the sisters of Sigma Alpha Iota (SAI) showcased their musical talents along with fellowship in the selections performed on Wednesday, November 13.

In the first piece performed, the Whistle Song by the Beta Chapter of SAI, the women sing beautifully together with pride, “We stand for right, the red and white, our colors that float on high, but best of all, we love that call of S-A-I.”

The musicale also presented a duet and several solo performances by the sisters.

Anna Grayson, a junior Vocal Music Education major from Memphis, performed I Stand All Amazed arranged by Tyler Castleton. She was accompanied on the piano by Sarah Anthony, a sophomore Pre-Med major from Martin.

Grayson sang the song of praise beautifully with her soprano voice.

“Her diction was fantastic,” said Orlando Brown, a junior Music Performance major from Ann Arbor, Mich. “She put so much emotion behind everything she sang - it was GREAT!”

Shenika Turner, a senior Music Education major from Humboldt, sang Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Harold Arlen. She was accompanied on the piano by Gary Nichols.

“It was a fun song to sing,” Turner said. “It puts people in a happy mood.”

Elizabeth King, a senior Art Education major from Franklin, performed I Enjoy Being a Girl from Flower Drum Song by Richard Rogers. She was accompanied by Linda Farmer on the piano.

“I am proud that my silhouette is curvy and I walk with a sweet and girlish gait, with my hips kinda swively and swirvey... I enjoy being a girl,” sang King with her alto voice.

“I enjoyed how Elizabeth presented it,” said Lewis Thompson, a senior Vocal Music Education major from Jackson. “She was very animated and lively.”

Adding to the vocal talents of the musicale, instrumental talent were also showcased in Two Outdoor Scenes by Leroy Ostransky.

Nichol Pritchard played the french horn with Sarah Anthony accompanying her on the piano.

“I found it to be a good experience,” said Pritchard, a junior Biology major from Union City, “because I’ve never played in front of a large group of people by myself before.”

Amy Hutcherson, a senior Music Education major from Fairveiw, sang Friendship by Cole Porter from Dubarry was a Lady with Elizabeth King. They were accompanied by Linda Farmer on the piano.

The song was very cute and showed the friendship between the two girls.

With lyrics such as “if they put a bullet in your brain, I’ll complain” and “friendship is the perfect blendship,” the song was very animated and comical.

“It wasn’t written as a duet,” said King, “but we did it anyways, because we are such good friends.”

The sisters of SAI also also sang three more songs: The Scale of S.A.I., the Benediction and the Sigma Alpha Iota Chorale.

“I thought they presented themselves very professionally,” said Jeanne Foster, the SAI Province Officer. “There was a great variety in the musicale and the music was beautiful.”
