SGA goes to Vegas

Members of SGA's executive council traveled to Las Vegas last week for the Certified Student Leader program.

SGA usually attends the Conference on Student Government Associations (COSGA) in College Station, Texas, but this year, they were ineligible to attend the conference.

Nikki Draper, vice president of SGA, said the members were ineligible because of “wrongdoings by previous administration.”

According to an SGA source who requested anonymity, but who attended the COSGA convention last year, a former executive council member became intoxicated at a COSGA function being held at a local bar. The source said the former executive council member left the bar, obtained a shopping car from a local grocery store and proceeded to ride the cart down a nearby hill. The source said the shopping cart apparently hit a pothole and ejected its passenger, who suffered a minor injury.

Because of the incident, COSGA contacted SGA to inform members that they were not eligible to attend the conference this year.

Several attempts were made to reach COSGA, but its officials were unavailable for comment. The seven executive council members who attended the Certified Student Leader program, however, were pleased with the results.

“It was a blessing in disguise that we weren't able to return to COSGA because now we have a chance to become certified student leaders,” Draper said.

Executive council members were required to take a difficult exam, she said, to become student leaders. The members also evaluated the conference and reported back to their advisers as to whether they would to return to the Certified Student Leader program in the future.
