SGA gives freshmen civics lesson

Student Government Association held a voter registration drive this week in the University Center. The main focus of the registration drive was to register the incoming freshmen. At press time, over 150 freshmen had registered to vote in Weakley County, even with marginal attendance by PEP groups.

Students who register locally have the opportunity to voice their opinions through their votes in local elections, that can have a great effect on their daily lives. One of the main issues of focus is restaurant reform, which, in theory, would bring in restaurants such as Applebee's, O'Charleys, etc.

Also, important races such as United States Senate and Governor of Tennessee are also up for grabs. According to SGA Elections Commissioner Joey Pierce, "I was very impressed to see so many freshmen taking the democratic process seriously."

Students who wish to vote locally can register this coming week, through SGA's tent that will be set up in the quadrangle. Student Government Association will be holding additional registration drives throughout the year to maximize student input in local, state, and national elections.

Also distributed with voter registration forms were applications to join the SGA Freshman Council. These applications are also available in the SGA office, and are due August 22. Freshman council is the freshman liaison to SGA, and is self-governing within certain guidelines.

Any student requesting more information on the SGA Freshman Council, or wishing to register to vote can contact SGA at 587-7785 or http://sga.utm.edu.
