"Schmo Knows"

The prolific and profound prophet of pigskin prognostication took the proverbial beating on my predictions last week going 12-17. That is a dismal 71 percent, bringing the Schmoman’s overall average to a very respectable 80 percent.

Schmo knows that the college gridiron is a tough place to call games, but the fact that I am the greatest at it makes it worth while. I did learn three things in the past week though.

  1. Believe in the power of a “Rally Monkey;” 2. The Volunteers couldn’t beat Martin Westview; and 3. Even after a bookie breaks your arm, you still owe him the money. I don’t particularly agree with the last one, but it is sadly true.

Speaking of bookies, here is Schmo’s picks for the college top 25:

#1 Miami travels to Rutgers. The ’canes top spot won’t last long if they keep playing these less than admirable teams. Miami may win the game, but it will cost them in the rankings. Miami

#19 Minnesota at #4 Ohio State. The Golden Gophers may be a good team, but I won’t bet against the Buckeyes twice. State should send these boys back to Jesse Ventura land fairly easy. Ohio State

#6 Notre Dame hosts Boston College. While the Irish have had a bad time against the boys from “Beantown” in the past, luck is definitely on their side. It will be interesting to see if history repeats itself though. The last time the Irish were undefeated and faced BC after defeating Florida State, Boston scored the upset. Not this time. Notre Dame

#12 Colorado at #2 Oklahoma. The Sooners will have their hands full with this Buffalo bunch. Colorado is a tough nose team, but Oklahoma is just stronger. After this one, the Sooners will take the top spot in rankings. Oklahoma

#22 Florida at #5 Georgia. While the SEC is competitive, I can not believe the Gator group is still in the top 25. Grossman will have to do more for Florida than throw passes to the opposing team as per usual to win this one. The Bulldogs should make their undefeated season dream a little bit closer to reality. Georgia

#17 Arizona State travels to #9 Washington State. While many wonder where in the world this W-State team came from, they have proved their worth. Coupled with the fact that the Sun Devils will have to travel up north for this one, it could be a disastrous day. Against all these factors, I have to go with my gut though. Arizona State

Illinois travels to #21 Penn State. Though it may cause Dr. Dan McDonough to give me a seriously stern talking to after class, I just don’t think the Lions will show any mercy on his team after loosing to Ohio State last week. Penn State

In other games it will be: #8 N.C. State over Georgia Tech, #16 Oregon over Stanford, #10 Iowa over Wisconsin, #13 Michigan over Michigan State, #14 Kansas State over Kansas, #25 Marshall over Akron, #18 Bowling Green over Kent State, #20 Florida State over Wake Forrest, #23 Iowa State over Missouri, #7 Texas over Nebraska and #3 Virginia Tech over Pittsburgh.

Well, that about wraps it up for me this week. Hope you all had a happy Halloween and have recooperated in time for class. It was probably a great night. Any comments, criticisms or complaints, email me at Sports_Pacer@utm.edu.
