"Schmo Knows"

A column by Sports Editor Joe Dacus

Another week gone by, another stupid fan stunt sponsored by a major city. Well, only in Chicago at least.

The Cubs’ fans and a demolition guy blew up the infamous foul ball that a fan interfered with, preventing a Cub player from catching it to grab the final out of an inning, and evetually lead to the Marlins winning the game and the series.

Somehow this whole “Lord of the Rings,” destroy the cursed object thing is just getting out of hand. The Cubs just plain choked. The Red Sox I do believe did fall to misfortune. “The Curse of the Bambino.”

In football, Jamal Lewis plead not guilty to federal drug charges yesterday. This reminds me of something. Hmm... Maybe Michael Irvin and Lawrence Taylor? Yeah that’s it.

So another pro-athlete has been charged in a drug case. Big surprise. I hate these athletes who talk about how they are so stressed out because of the millions they make and the exposure they have.

I work two jobs, serve in the National Guard, go to school, am married and a member of a fraternity. Funny, because I’m not filthy rich, but under a ton of stress, yet I’m not a coke-head. I don’t care what the excuse is, pro-athletes are allowed to get away with too much. Just because you play a sport well, does not make you above the law.

Murder, drugs, and spouse abuse are inexcusable, no matter who you are. Before I rant for two pages, I’m just going to change the subject.

In basketball, analysts feel that Shaq and Kobe Bryant may be leaving the Los Angeles Lakers for other teams after this season.

Most see Shaq moving to a struggling team in a big trade deal. They also see Kobe moving on to play for a prison team somewhere in Colorado. Hey Kobe, why don’t you call Martha Stewart. She may be able to give you a few tips on how to spruce up you cell.

The NFL is preparing for draft day in late April. With a court ruling that has made all college players eligible, including guys right out of high school, many are flocking to the scouts to see what their chances of going pro could be. This will eventually lead to a huge decline in college football and a major upswing in the NFL’s popularity.

If you play college football with the hopes of making it to the NFL, don’t worry, you may be able to go there after only your first season. Good luck, share the wealth.

In college basketball, Stanford and St. Joseph’s still top the nation. I have to throw my support behind St. Joe’s because they have been underrated for so long. Good luck to them, at least they won’t have to worry about the Vols making any runs at the top.

Well, that about wraps up my insane ramblings for the week. Hope you got something out of it. If you disagree with me, too bad. I have a column and you don’t. Till next time, remember: “You can lead a man to the bookie, but you just can’t save his legs when he doesn’t pay up.” Till next week, later.
