Schmo Knows

You are now witness to a new era in sports writing, Schmotime. Okay, Maybe I am only a legend in my own mind, but hey, that’s what is important to me. In any case, the Schmoman is going to make some early season predictions.

People on this campus have been saying that the Skyhawk Football Team won their last game last week against KY-Wesleyan. I have to disagree. I believe the ’hawks will surprise many campus nay-sayers and pull out another win this season.

Against who you ask. Well I don’t like to name names, but their initials are Murray State.

The over-rated Racers will find out first hand what a surprising combination of passing and running the Skyhawk offense possesses and I think the UTM defense will dig in and give the ponies and run for their money. It would be a sight that would leave MSU Head Coach Joe Pannunizio (sounds more like a Soprano’s character than a football coach) with congestive heart failure and UTM with something to finally celebrate.

People say I am crazy, deluded, dreaming, and several other things I’m not allowed to print. I think I’m right, and can’t wait to see the Skyhawks walk away from their home field victorious.

If I do prove to be right, I can only ask for one thing in return. I want to see Capt. Skyhawk bodyslam that ridiculous MSU mascot, Dunker. A “People’s Elbow” would be a nice finish to the spectacle, but that’s just me.

Some say, “Schmo, you’ve just got issues with that school because you used to go there.” Well, I have a column and you don’t, so bite me!

I also see another OVC crown for the Skyhawk Volleyball team. They looked a little shaky in start of their home opener, but no one can deny their two major assets. Experience and Power.

Coach Chris Rushing will be smiling all the way through the OVC tourney as the ’hawks secure another banner for the Fieldhouse.

The soccer team, now that’s a hard call. With having played no OVC games to date, I really don’t know how well they will stand in the conference. If the opening games of the season are any indication, the team will have a breakthrough year. Though some think youth will be the faltering point for the team, if Freshman Dani Myrick is any indication, youth may be their secret weapon. With strong play from Christina Moore and Meagan Jordan, and the steel nerves of Goalkeeper Caryn Scheufler the Skyhawks should go 3-2 in the conference and get a pretty good shot in the tournament.

I know many wished I would look into the crystal ball and predict actual games and forecast the basketball season, but my bookie said he would break my legs. Or did he say that because I owe him money. Oh well, who can remember all those things.
