Santa’s Village prepares to entertain kids for 2002


Santa’s not the only one making a list and checking it twice;so are Martin Parks and Recreation employees.

Nearly 100 people attended a Santa’s Village lucheon Thursday, Nov. 7, sponsored by MTD Inc. at The Hearth, officially kicking off the countdown to the 2002 event. The crowd was one of the largest to attend the annual kick-off since Santa’s Village began.

The 18th annual Santa’s Village will take place Dec.12-15, with opening ceremonies scheduled to begin with the tree lighting ceremony at 6:15 p.m. Thursday.

Following last year’s attendance total of 13,500 people, city officials said they expect this to be the best year to date.

Features at this year’s event will include an enchanted forest, a model train display, a petting farm, children’s rides, arts and crafts booths and, of course, visits with Santa.

“Santa’s Village is all about entertainment, helping others and getting people inot the Christmas spirirt,” said Dennis Suiter, director of the Martin parks and Recreation department. “The theme for this year’s festivities is ‘Christmas in the Good Ole USA,’ featuring new displays that will portray various places throughout the countyr. Officials are very excited abou this year, anticipating one of hte biggest turnouts ever. They would also like to say a very special thanks to all of the people and businesses that help make Santa’s Village possible each year. We all truly appreciate your support.”

Santa’s Village will be held in the West Tennessee Agricultural Pavillion in the University of Tennessee at Martin Ned McWherter Agriculture Complex from 6-9 p.m Dec. 12-12; from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 14; and from 1-5 p.m. Dec. 15. There is no admission charge, however, visitors are encouraged to donate $5 worth of non-perishable foods or goods, usable toys.
