Saint Louis ends UTM winning streak

The UTM bats exploded for 12 hits and senior Brady Nighswonger extended his hitting streak to 16 games, but it wasn't enough for the Skyhawks to knock off host Saint Louis University Tuesday afternoon.

Saint Louis posted an 11-7 win over UTM and ended the Skyhawks six-game winning streak. The Skyhawks fall to 10-10 on the year, while Saint Louis improves to 9-12.

The Skyhawks jumped out in front of Saint Louis with three runs in the third inning, but Saint Louis answered with six runs in the bottom of the third. The Skyhawks tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth and in the top of the eighth, but it wasn't enough as Saint Louis scored one run in each of the next five innings.

Nighswonger, from Torrington, Wyo., turned in a two-for-three effort at the plate and drove in a run. Seniors Brian Jordan, Kelly Davis and Dan Stephens each had two hits in the game. Jordan and junior Bryant Jones, from Waddy, Ky., had two RBI each.

The Skyhawks used four pitchers in the nine-inning contest. Junior Jarrad Robinson, from Iuka, Miss., suffered his third loss of the season. Justin Bryant, a freshman from Clarksville, worked four innings in the game. He gave up three hits and two earned runs. He managed to strike out two. Senior Jonathan Spiceland pitched one-third of an inning, while Dustin summers, a sophomore from Paris, Tenn., pitched one and two-thirds of an inning.

Saint Louis had 11 hits and took advantage of nine walks in the game. Jake Friederich and Kyle Wort led the Billikens effort with three hits each.

This is the second time this season that Saint Louis and UTM have played. Each team has won the game played on its home field. The Skyhawks will return to action at home against Austin Peay on Saturday at 12 p.m.
