SAC Lip Sync brings back childhood memories

Last night, the energy level was high as the Student Activities Council (SAC) packed the Watkins Auditorium for their annual Lip Sync competition.

Due to inclement weather, the show (originally scheduled to take place outside, near the University Center) was moved to the confined space of the Watkins Auditorium.

Even so, a crowd gathered to cheer on various campus organizations as they took their places on stage to present an assortment of shows featuring an “animation” theme.

Leading off for the male division, were the brothers of Pi Kappa Alpha with a comical rendition of Pikes’ Cartoon Network, featuring the Ninja Turtles and Inspector Gadget. Next, the men of Phi Sig entertained the crowd with a visit from the Simpsons and SAE brought us back to the days of Fat Albert. Sig Ep sang along with Shaggy and Scooby Doo and Alpha Gamma Rho helped Elmer Fudd “kill the rabbit.”

The brothers of Kappa Alpha Order, earning 1st place in the male division, reminded us how cartoons influenced us as children with a heart felt rendition of When you wish upon a star. Their show also included the loveable Spongebob Squarepants, the dishes from Beauty and the Beast, the Seven Dwarves, the Little Mermaid and Shrek.

Receiving 2nd place in the male division, Alpha Tau Omega wowed the crowed with their bare chests as they performed The Bear Necessities. Their show also featured selected songs from Aladdin, The Lion King, Lady and the Tramp and Davy Crocket.

The RAs from UTM Housing, the only entry in the housing division, took home the 1st place trophy for their division. A little girl with a big remote sat on the edge of the stage as she introduced the crowd to some of her favorite cartoons, such as Garfield, George of the Jungle, He-Man, the Gummi Bears and Darkwing Duck.

The female division of the show began with the ladies of Alpha Delta Pi. These girls gave a glimpse of what really goes on at an ADPi slumber party with the Slumber Party Under the Stars, as they impersonated cartoons like Mulan and the Lion King.

Chi Omega then took the crowd to Chi-O Land with songs from the 101 Dalmatians and Peter Pan.

The sisters of Zeta Tau Alpha took 2nd place in the female division with a show titled Animation Creation. Their show included songs from Spongebob Squarepants, Duck Tales, the Care Bears, the Simpsons, South Park, Beavis and Butthead, the Chipmunks, the Ninja Turtles, Popeye and Fat Albert. Zeta ended their show with a flashy rendition of Beauty and the Beasts' Be our Guest.

Claiming 1st place in the female division, and best of show, were the ladies of Alpha Omicron Pi. A giant panda introduced the audience to the Magical World of AOPi with a little help from her extremely animated friends including: Pocahontas, Snow White and the Dwarfs, Shrek, 101 Dalmatians and Cruella Deville, Peter Pan and Tinkerbell, Alice and the White Rabbit, Baloo, Lilo and Stitch, Ariel and Sebastian, Cinderella and the mice, Flubber, and Aladdin and his princess.

First place winners walked away with $100 and 2nd place winners took home $50.

“Everyone really did a great job this year,” said Heather Nicholson, a senior communications major from Milan. “It really brought back some childhood memories.”

Lia Fisher, the Executive Chairman of SAC and senior education major from Memphis and Bo Mantooth, the Entertainment Chairman of SAC, sophomore communications major from Adams, hosted the event.

SAC, made up of student volunteers, is the primary provider of student programming on this campus. It is SAC's goal to find things for students to do outside of the classroom. SAC welcomes any student suggestions and is open to working with other student organizations in order to provide quality student programming. To get involved with SAC, such as Lip Sync, go to www.utm.edu/~sac/application.html and fill out an online application for committee membership or stop by the SAC office upstairs in the University Center.
