SAACS receives two grants to be used for community outreach chemistry projects

The UTM Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society (SAACS) chapter has received two grants from the American Chemical Society Committee on Education. One grant, the Innovative Activities Grant (IAG), will be used to fund activities focusing on the theme “Green Chemistry Reagents from Renewable Soybean Resource.” SAACS will invite guest speakers and give presentations to highlight the importance of green chemistry in sustainable growth. They will especially concentrate on the use of soybeans as a renewable resource, reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Laboratory and literature investigations will deal with bio-diesel, solvents and other reagents derived from soybeans. The second grant is from the Community Interaction - Student Affiliates (CISA) program. CISA is designed to establish a national framework for undergraduates in science to contribute to their communities by helping improve science education. As part of the CISA project, SAACS sponsored chemistry merit badge clinics for Boy and Girl Scouts. SAACS also hosted National Chemistry Week (NCW) celebrations Oct. 20-26 on campus at local schools, and will host the 23rd Annual High School Science Bowl set for Nov. 9 at UTM. For more information on UTM SAACS activities, contact Dr. S.K. Airee, chapter adviser and UT Martin professor of chemistry, at (731) 587-7454.
