SAACS 23rd Science Bowl “hard work”, but worth it for students

On Saturday, Nov. 9, 192 high school students competed for trophies and medallions at the 23rd Annual Science Bowl. The Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society has been conducting the science bowl since Dr. Airee took the position as advisor of the club 23 years ago. The 20 SAACS members that put on this year's bowl began the event with a written test for the students in the morning. The test contained 25 objective questions about Biology, Chemistry and General Science. The selection of eight schools for the afternoon bowl was based on the comparison of the average total score of two of each school's highest scoring students. There were also chemistry demonstrations by SAACS members in the morning. “This was the second year I've participated in the science bowl,” said Rebekah Kirkpatrick, a pre-pharmacy major. “It's lots of hard work putting it on but so gratifying to see the high school students get so much out of it.” There were 18 schools represented from west to middle Tennessee. The high school students that compete in the science trivia bowl are some of the smartest from their schools. This year's first place winners was White Station High School from Memphis, second place Houston High School from Erin, and third place was shared by Camden High School and University School from Jackson.
