ROTC hammers into community service

Rain and snow may have held up the construction of Habitat for Humanity's shed, but the ROTC cadets began hammering away Friday, February 28.

ROTC cadets are working with Habitat for Humanity to build the shed for a family in Dresden. Habitat for Humanity has already built the family's house, but the shed project was held up because of the weather. Friday was a convenient day for the cadets to begin work because they were able to drop by and help whenever they had free time. Many of the cadets dropped by between classes or on lunch breaks. After finishing some work on Friday, the cadets began working again Wednesday, March 5. The cadets worked from about noon to 3 p.m. to complete the shed.

The building of the shed gave many ROTC students the chance to get involved with community service and to learn both team work and leadership skills.

“The cadets have had fun working together and serving the community through this Habitat for Humanity project,” said Patti Hendry, a sophomore cadet Sergeant from Sommerville. “As our plans continually had to be adjusted due to weather and other factors, they each contributed wholeheartedly above and beyond the call of duty.”

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, Christian ministry that builds houses for those who cannot afford to provide suitable housing on their own. Volunteer labor and donations of money and materials allow Habitat for Humanity to continue their quest of eliminating poverty housing and homelessness.
