‘Risky Business,’ ‘Heilsgeschicte’ intramural soccer champs

Risky Business and Heilsgeschicte won their final games, winning the championship in the intramural soccer tournament at the Intramural Soccer Field. The teams beat out both greek and independent teams to take the top honors.

This past week saw a string of competitive tournament matches in the field of Intramural Soccer. The tournament began Sunday, lasting through Wednesday with some much heated battles and plenty of upsets.

In Men's Talon on Monday, Pi Kappa Alpha edged Kappa Alpha in a 1-0 victory. Also seen was a victory by the rising Alpha Tau Omega team for a 4-1 win over Alpha Gamma Rho.

In the open division the D. tigers beat Superkicks 1-0, and perhaps the biggest upset of the day came when Heilsgeschicte beat defending intramural champs Strikers 1-0.

In an extremely physical Tuesday game, fan favorites ATO beat the Pikes 2-1. Also that day came an intense shootout in the open division with D. Tigers and Heilsgeschicte going into a double shootout following a 1-1 tie game.

On Wednesday, the ATOs faced Heilsgeschicte with the ATOs coming out strong in the beginning, quickly scoring a goal with the Heils scoring one later in the half to make it 1-1 going into the 2nd half.

In the 2nd half, the Heils quickly scored a goal; Paulo Hexsel made the goal with a picture perfect bicycle kick. Hexsel scored again later along with a final goal by Dani Castro to bring a victory of 4-1.

Heils player Jeff Graves said, "Hard fought victory, Good game by both teams."

In the Women's Talon on Monday, Risky Business beat Alpha Delta Pi and the Chi Omega team got a forfeit victory from Zeta Tau Alpha.

On Tuesday, Intocaveis edged past the Chi-Os to secure a spot in the finals; in the Sorority bracket Alpha Omicron Pi won over ADPi to play the Chi-Os for their championship.

On Wednesday the Chi-Os won the sorority championship in a 1-0 victory over AOPi. In the overall championship Risky Business completed their flawless record with a final victory of 1-0 over Introcaveis. Scoring the goal was Freshman Brittney Dyer.

"It was a great victory because we didn't have key players, but we all worked hard as a team," said Katie Stevenson.

The love and admiration for Intramural games was summed up best in the words of Heilsgeschicte player Nathan

Washburn: "I'd just like to thank all my fans for making this possible."

The Intramural season started at the beginning of the semester. The teams have been playing an average of two to three games a week.

The championship began after the start of the single elimination tournament in which all teams participated.

The final tournament lasted from last Sunday to Wednesday, with winning teams having to play all four consecutive days.

The winning teams receive 400 points in the overall sports competition and earn bragging rights, which will last until next year.

Flag-football will soon be the hot competition on campus, with intramural games starting as soon as the weather permits.
