Rifle Team outguns APSU and Morehead

The University of Tennessee at Martin rifle teams defeated Austin Peay and Morehead State this past weekend while dropping one match to the Citadel.

The match, hosted by Austin Peay State University, was only an air rifle match.

The Citadel took first place with a 1,507, followed by UT Martin women with a 1,502, while Morehead had a 1,489. UT Martin’s mixed team shot a 1,478, Austin Peay had 1,445 and Morehead women had a 1,408. The Citadel blue team fired 1,347.

UT Martin’s Courtney Rea finished second overall as an individual followed by Jessie Wilson, also from UT Martin, who took third in the match.

“I am very pleased with a good, solid team performance,” said Bob Beard, UT Martin rifle coach.

“Freshman Jennie Fladebo and junior Courtney Rea continue to shoot well, while Jessie Wilson is back scoring in the 380’s,” Beard said.

On the women’s side Wilson and Fladebo lead with a pair of 382s, although Wilson won the tiebreaker to take third in the match. Freshman Devra Harvey had a 370 and senior team captain Amanda Karns had a 368.

The women’s team score of 1,502 was a good solid performance, taking home second place, Beard said.

The UT Martin mixed team fired a 1,478 lead by Rea with a 383.

Byron Godbee fired a 376, Becky Latimer shot 360 and sophomore team captain Brian Stiles shot a 359.

Collegiate air rifle teams are made up of four shooters who shoot 40 shots from the standing position. Each center shot is worth ten points. The four-person team can consist of any combination of men or women. A perfect team score is 1,600.

The UT Martin rifle team’s record stands at 3-2. UT Martin will go on the road again this weekend to shoot against Ole Miss in Oxford.
