Respect others’ quest for success while in the library

I usually do not complain, but here is my moment to shine. Please bear with me.

One Friday, two of my classes were cancelled, creating two hours that I normally do not have. Since I have a full load this semester, a night/weekend job and two young children, I opted to use this precious element of time to study for a Monday test.

I began my journey in a private, but open area in Gooch Hall.

Shortly, a girl with a cell phone sat behind me, talking loudly. Was she trying to be heard? To sound important? Who knows!

Since it was an open area and I needed to study, I gave the girl the benefit of the doubt and continued my quest to study at the library.

Upon entering a secure area in the library, I found a place to resume my course of study on the second floor.

Shortly, a “domestic squabble” ensued between a couple in a closed-door room nearby. The shouts, accusations and screams sounded as if the barrier of the door was non-existent. The fight ended and soon I resumed my study for my Monday test.

Next, two library workers marched through talking loudly. I tried to study.

Then, another couple in a secured room laughed and joked—with the door open. I tried to study.

Finally, two male students walked through, talking animatedly. I gave up and went to a fast food restaurant for peace and quiet.

In light of these incidences, I have opted to compile a short guide for study etiquette that I will call “studyquette.” Here it is:

• If someone is studying—respect it. • If you must chat on the cell phone—go outside. • If arguing with your significant other is necessary—keep it at home. • If an area is secured for study—please respect it. • If you crave an animated conversation with friends—go to the University Center.

Again, these are some helpful hints not designed to anger or enrage, just some observations and requests.

And as far as studying goes? For me, there is always the weekend.
