Reese goes Home

In Sweet Home Alabama, Reese Witherspoon goes back to her southern roots.

Witherspoon plays fashion designer Melanie Carmichael, who is taking New York by storm.

In addition to ruling the runways with her fashions, she is also engaged to the mayor’s son, Andrew, played by Patrick Dempsey.

She realizes that she must go back to her hometown of Pigeon Creek, Alabama to get a divorce from her husband, Jake, played by Josh Lucas.

This sounds easier than it actually is. We soon find out that Jake still loves Melanie and it looks like she may still love him. Melanie and Jake were childhood sweethearts, but, when their relationship developed problems, she headed north. She may have made a new life for herself in New York, but she realizes that life in the south isn’t that bad.

In this movie, the only problem is that you don’t know which couple to root for.

Melanie and Jake seem like that they were meant to be together from the moment that they first kissed at 10 years old; while Melanie and Andrew seem like the perfect power couple.

One good thing about the movie is that neither men is made out to be a villain. They are gentlemen, and you can tell that they care deeply for Melanie.

In the end, when she finally makes her decision, the other is genuinely happy for the couple.

There are sweet scenes between Melanie and Andrew, but also between Jake and her. These scenes are balanced out by some humorous scenes; although these could use a little bit of work.

All in all, this was a cute movie, even one the fellas can enjoy. I guess you could say that this movie was more fun than a greased pig on a Friday night. Or something.
