Rebels take out Skyhawks

The UTM lady Softball team fell short of victories as they faced Mississippi in a double header held Wednesday on the Bettye Giles Field at Martin. Upon a strong performance over spring break in Florida, the lady Skyhawks could not get jump started as they faced Mississippi’s Rebels.

The Rebels dominated the first inning and all of the first game as they soared past UTM in a 7 to 1 victory. The Rebels came out strong in the first inning by scoring two runs on a two run hommer, by Justice.

UTM appeared to have a spark in the second inning when Baize singled to left, followed by Runyan singling to right, advancing Baize to third. With two runners on and a chance to get on the board, Moffit singled to center advancing Runyan to second, and scoring Baize for the RBI.

Unfortunally, from that point, the Skyhawks were unable to catch the Rebels as they continued to dominate the offense. In the top of the third, the Rebels filled the bases with only one out. With a Grand Slam by Brahs to right center, the Rebels never looked back.

Coach Donley Canary said “we are hitting well and making mental mistakes, we did so well in Florida at the tournament and we appear to be in a slump”. Senior Meredith Ramsey commented that “we are trying to find the key that will pull us together for the win”. As the Skyhawks advanced into the second game they got the first run on the board when in the bottom of the second. Davis homered to right center, to put the Skyhawks on the board. Mississippi’s Layman homered to center at the top of the third to tie.

With the next three innings scoreless the Lady Shyhawks had a chance to get on top when in the bottom of the sixth, Christa Webb singled to right center. With a sacarfice bunt by Runyan. to advanced Webb.

With the runner in scoring position, the Skyhawks were unable to connect to bring her across the plate. University of Mississippi once again was able to take control in the top of the second, Ott singled to right field. McIntire singled to shortstop, and Brahs singled to advanced to second on an error by the third baseman, and the winning RBI for the Rebels.
