Rakes’s adjusting well to position, UTM

Dr. Thomas Rakes, who came to UTM from the University of Louisiana at Monroe, has been our vice chancellor of Academic Affairs for only six months but he seems to be extremely comfortable in the position.

When asked what he enjoyed most about the job, Rakes said, “There are a number of positives. These include daily opportunities to be involved with bright, interesting students and faculty. The daily interactions make my role as chief academic officer exciting. I also enjoy the positive atmosphere and overall work environment at UTM.”

One of the hardest things about the job for Rakes is “having to make decisions involving resource allocation. The task of prioritizing is not easy, even great ideas and projects have to be ranked in this time of tight budgets and increasing demands for bigger and better services.”

When it comes to relationships with the students, they seem to have impressed Rakes. “There are challenges and areas of concern that surface from time to time when dealing with students, but most of the issues I have seen are more individual and interest-related, and are not reflective of campus-wide concerns.” He was also excited that students are so involved in campus life.

Dr. Rakes said that he is “delighted by the manner and spirit in which students, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the community interact. The overall focus is on getting things done from a perspective of positive action. The overall level of leadership at UTM is progressive and appropriately focused.”

As for the town of Martin, Rakes enjoys it, as well as, the surrounding area. “The lack of traffic, excellent schools, good roads, a very clean environment, and great people make this area a friendly and safe place to work. I have also been pleased by the good food in the region. From Martin to Fulton to Troy, there are several excellent places to dine.” He and his wife enjoy visiting antique stores and flea markets in the area.

When asked if the job was everything he expected, Rakes responded, “Yes!”

Dr. Rakes holds a bachelor of science degree in Psychology with a minor in Elementary Education from Milligan College, in northeast Tennessee. He has a master of art degree in Reading from East Tennessee State University. His doctorate of education in curriculum and instruction was acquired from the UT Knoxville.

Before coming to UTM, Rakes severed as interim president and provost, and vice president for academic affairs at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. He also served as vice provost and dean of graduate studies and research as well as the dean of College of Education and Human Development on the Monroe campus.

He filled the position vacated by Dr. Christopher Chalokwu in September of 2000. As vice chancellor of academic affairs, he will be responsible for the administration and coordination of academic activities including the Office of the Assistant Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs and Dean of Graduate Studies, plus the five undergraduate colleges. He presides over meetings of the Academic Affairs Council and the Council of Academic Deans.

He lives in Martin with his wife, Glenda C. Rakes, assistant professor of educational studies.
