Public Safety brings traffic, crowd control to Homecoming week

Homecoming is just around the corner and everyone is getting ready for week-long festivities celebrating UTM, even the Department of Public Safety.

UTM Safety and Security is planning to take some precautions associated with Homecoming and the large crowds of people and festivities that Homecoming brings with it.

“During Homecoming events there will be large numbers of alumni and visitors on our campus. Department of Public Safety Officers will be involved in traffic and crowd control initiatives which are not normally required during normal day-to-day activities. Events such as rope pull, parade, pyramid/pep rally, step show, and party related activities, result in an increased need for traffic/crowd control,” said Public Safety Director Rick Hatler.

With the increase in traffic on campus and the influx in pedestrian traffic, some passageways on campus will have restricted access to motor vehicles. The circle between Browning and Ellington Halls will possibly be closed as well as the drive behind Cooper Hall that leads to the circle between Austin Peay and McCord Halls.

“In addition to traffic control on the streets surrounding campus, officers will also be involved in controlling the traffic flow in on-campus areas such as the residence halls. If necessary, officers will restrict vehicles from driving into the areas between the dorms in order to insure pedestrian safety and allow for emergency vehicle access should the need arise.

Officers will also work closely with residence hall staff members to maintain clear passageways in and out of the residence halls,” said Hatler.

UTM Safety and Security wants everyone to have an enjoyable and safe Homecoming.
