Poor shooting stops Skyhawks, 77-44


The UTM men's basketball team was struggling with turnovers during its recent four-game road swing. The Skyhawks returned to the friendly confines of the Elam Center Tuesday night and showed no signs of having turnover trouble.

Instead, the Skyhawks had shooting woes from the field and from three-point range as visiting Murray State claimed a 77-44 win OVC win. The Skyhawks shot 23.8 percent from the field, hitting just 15 of 63 attempts. From the three-point arch, the Skyhawks hit two of 12 attempts for 16.7 percent.

The best shooting effort of the night for the Skyhawks came at the free throw line where they hit 12 of 16 attempts or 75 percent of their shots. Junior Jeremy Kelly led the Skyhawks with 21 points. Kelly went five-for-five at the line, but was seven for 23 from the field.

Murray State was led by Cuthbert Victor with 14 points. Antione Whelchel netted a dozen points and grabbed 10 rebounds. In all, 12 Racers each scored two points or more.

Murray led 34-13 at the half and led by as many as 40 points in the second half.

With the loss, the Skyhawks fall to 3-10 in the OVC. Murray State improves to 11-2 overall.

The Skyhawks return to action Saturday, Feb. 21 when they host Tennessee State. Tipoff is at 6 p.m.
