Phone booths: out of style, very deadly

***1/2 of 5

In the busy streets of New York, anyone can find hundreds of people using cell phones. Phone booths have become somewhat obsolete.

On one busy afternoon in the city of New York, Stu Shepard (Colin Farrell) rushes around doing his normal everyday routine as a publicist.

He uses deceit and lies in order to glorify himself and get to where no one matters to him unless they can help him move up in the world.

A part of his usual routine is entering a phone booth at exactly the same time each day to call Pam McFadden (Katie Holmes), one of his clients and also a desire in his heart.

Although Stu is married to Kelly (Radha Mitchell), he still imagines sleeping around with Pam.

On this particular day, Stu is approached by a pizza delivery man bringing a pizza to him. Stu goes off on the pizza man and this is where the plot of the movie begins.

He receives a phone call from a mysterious person (voice by Kiefer Sutherland) who knows everything about him. The caller knows about his desire for Pam and how Stu uses people.

The plot begins to thicken as the caller threatens Stu’s life. He cannot leave the phone booth or the caller will shoot him. Crowds begin to form around the phone booth as a man is shot near the phone booth. Everyone believes that Stu is the culprit, but he cannot defend himself or get off the phone.

During the midst of the crisis, both the women in Stu’s life appears to see what is happening. The mysterious caller orders Stu to tell his wife about Pam and also to tell Pam that he is married to Kelly.

The caller also orders Stu to tell everyone in the crowd and everyone watching the news about the type of man he is - how he uses people and lies to everyone just to make himself appear better.

The movie has a weird ending, but nonetheless, it was a movie worth seeing in the theaters.

It’s interesting how fast time flies by when you finish with the movie. Then again, how much time could you spend with a man standing in a phone booth talking on the phone for the majority of the movie?

The movie is directed by Joel Schumacher and written by Larry Cohen.

The movie is out in theaters now and is currently still being shown at the Cine theater in Martin.
