Perimeter shooting dooms UTM


Southeast Missouri State's Otahkians canned 12 of 18 three-pointers and cruised to an 83-60 Ohio Valley Conference women's basketball victory over visiting UTM Thursday night in the Show Me Center at Cape Girardeau, Mo.

The Otahkians built an early 8-0 lead as Yashika Sidbury and Sami Jo Cotton knocked down three-pointers in the first minute of the game.

The Skyhawks trailed by 15 points with 13:47 to play in the first half.

Junior Chandra Carey came off the bench to jump start the Skyhawk offense in the first half. Carey scored 11 points in the first 20 minutes and, along with sophomore Keva Robinson, the Skyhawks cut the deficit six points with 6:43 to play.

Robinson finished the first half with five points.

The Otahkians led 33-25 at the break. They hit four of eight three-pointers in the first half.

In the second half, the Oathkians fired treys with no problem. Sarah Costello, Jessica Aebi and Cotton connected on eight threes in the second half.

The Otahkians shot 54.7 percent from the field in the contest and 66.7 percent from the field.

The Skyhawks had three double-digit scorers. Carey finished with 14 points, while Deina Willingham added 11 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds.

Sophomore Keva Robinson tossed in 10 points. The Skyhawks shot 35.4 percent from the field.

With the loss the Skyhawks fall to 7-12 overall and 4-5 in the Ohio Valley Conference race.

The Skyhawks travel to Charleston, Ill., Saturday for an OVC game against host Eastern Illinios. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
